Getting lots of high quality links to your website is essential for a good search engine rank, especially if you are targetting competitive keyword phrases.
Most people concentrate on getting links to their home page (index page), but it is good practise to also get some deep links.
So, what is deep linking? A deep link is simply a link to a page on your website that is not your home page. It could be a link to a product page, a link to your blog or a specific blog post, or a link to another internal page on your website.
Getting a mixture of links to your home page and to other pages on your website looks much more natural than just getting link to your home page and it will also help you to get a better ranking for your internal pages as well as your home page. Here are some ways that you can get deep links:

Link Internally within your site or blog – make sure you have a good navigation system within your website. This can include site menus and also linking back to internal pages from your home page or from other pages and blog posts where relevant.

Use deep linking in your blog comments. When you leave a comment on someones blog consider using a deep link rather than your home page link. It may be appropiate here to leave a link to your blog or a relevant blog post.
Exchange links with other webmasters or bloggers and ask them to link to one of your internal pages rather than a home page.
Use deep links in forums. Most links allow you to have one or more links to your website in your forum signature. You don’t have to link directly to your home page – you could link to another relevant internal page on your website. You could also include a link to a relevant page in a forum post, but be careful not to spam.
Paid Directory Submissions – some directories allow you to include deep links. However, these are usually restricted to paid submissions.

SEO for Blogs: Part Five – Off Site Optimization

This is the final part of my SEO for Blogs series and I am going to concentrate on the very important subject of Off Site Optimization. Off site optimizationis all about building backlinks to your website and if you miss this part out you can probably wave goodbye to getting any traffic from the search engines!
Before we start I am assuming that you have already read part one, part two, part three and part four of my WordPress SEO series and you have chosen keywords for your home page, have a big list of keywords to use in your future blog posts and you have optimized your home page.
A backlink is simply a link from a website pointing to your website. Search engines see backlinks a bit like votes for a website – the more backlinks that you have the more important your website is deemed by the search engines. It’s not just the quantity of backlinks that counts though – it is also the quality. A backlink from an important website is better than a backlink from a brand new website. A backlink from a page that has just a few other links on it is better than a backlink from a page that has 50 other links on it.
In an ideal world, backlinks would come naturally. People would link to your website because the content on your site is useful to others. This happens a lot, but it can be difficult to get natural links to a new website that nobody knows about.
For this reason you need to spend a good proportion of your marketing efforts acquiring backlinks. There are lots of ways to do this and I discuss this in more detail in my how to improve your Google page rank post. In summary here are some of the things that you can do to get a backlink:
- Write a short article of 400-500 words and submit it to article directories. Include an author resource box containing a link to your website.
- Submit your website to online directories.
- Leave a comment on other peoples’ blog posts and include a link to your website.
- Post in forums related to your website and put a link to your website in the signature.
- Write a Press release and distribute it to online press release directories.
- Create a free report, include your link in the report and allow people to give it away for free.
- Create online profiles on websites such as LinkedIn, Facebook and MySpace and put a link to your website in your profile
These are just some ways to get a backlink to your website.
Usually when you submit an article, leave a comment on a blog or submit your site to a directory you will get a choice of the words to use in the anchor text of the link to your link. The anchor text is the clickable link that is usually underlined and in blue font. It is important to use your keywords in the anchor text wherever you can and this will help you to rank more highly in the search engines.
You will do better in the search engines if you keep your link building as natural as possible. You should try to:
- Build your links slowly and steadily – don’t try to get thousands of links in the space of a few weeks.
- Vary your anchor text – as well as using your keywords in the anchor text you should use variations of your keywords.
- Avoid purchasing links or getting links from sites that are not listed in the search engines – although this won’t have a negative impact on your search engine ranking, it is unlikely to help. Google frowns upon bought links.
Finally, you shouldn’t just build links to your home page, you should spend some of your link building efforts building links to individual blog posts or pages. The Google Panda Update
There have been many updates to the Google search algorithm and every now and then webmasters find themselves in the situation where they need to make major changes to their SEO strategy in order to stay afloat. Some of the changes have a really considerable impact and the recent Panda update is one of those cases when you just can’t pretend the changes don’t affect you.
What Is Panda
Panda isn’t just another update to the search algorithm, many of which we have seen over the years. One of the special things about Panda is that it uses human reviewers to rate sites. No, not all sites are rated by humans but there is a sample of sites where human reviewers make the evaluation and after a pattern in reviewing is noticed, the job is continued by machines, which presumably use the same criteria as humans. So, if you have made the mistake to optimize your site only for bots, now you will be hit right between the eyes.
Panda is aimed at improving the quality of search results by removing low quality, spammy entries from the first positions. The first victims were the so called content mills but the later updates hit many other types of sites as well. What these sites had in common was that they had tons of useless content that was artificially pushed to the top results pages. Many sites who are (or considered themselves) no content mills were hit pretty hard because they exhibited similarities to content farms and if you don’t want to be the next victim, or if you have already been hit yourself and wonder how to get back on your feet, here are some tips to help you.
How to Counteract Panda
Any step in the direction of removing low quality content will help you deal with Panda but here are some steps that are especially useful.
1 No Multiple Pages with the Same Keyword
The reason why content mills were slapped the hardest by Panda is that they had many (in some cases in the thousands!) pages with the same keyword. When you have multiple authors and you give them the freedom to choose what to write about, you will obviously end with multiple pages that use the same lucrative keywords. But it isn’t only the content mills where you can find 100s of pages with the “how to get an ex back”, 1,000s about “acai berry”, etc. If your site has multiple pages that target the same keyword, get rid of them immediately because this is simply drowning you.
2 Duplicate Anchor Text and Links from Article Directories/Low Quality Sites
Backlinks are very important but as you know it is quality backlinks that matter. This is why Panda penalized sites with tons of backlinks from article directories or other content sites because these sites are deemed low quality. Additionally, when the anchor text of your backlinks is always the same (and it has a keyword in it), this is more than suspicious that this link hasn’t been created naturally. This is why it is best if you use multiple variations of your keywords (or even better – multiple keywords) as the anchor text of backlinks. For instance, if your keyword is “how to get an ex back”, you can also use “how to reunite with ex”, “how to reconcile with an ex lover”, etc.
3 Clean Your WHOLE Site
Panda is a site-wide penalty and as a result, even if you have some really outstanding pages but you also have lots of so-so ones, your whole site will suffer. The only solution here is to fix or remove the low quality ones and wait for the crawlers to come.
4 Get Rid of Autogenerated Content and Roundup/Comparison Type of Pages
Autogenerated pages have nothing to do with quality and this is why they are especially unpopular now. Roundups/comparison types of pages can also hurt you because these don’t have much original content in them. These factors are the reason why so many shopping sites where these comparison pages are so numerous are hit by Panda. If you run a shopping site, your task isn’t easy because you can’t get rid of these completely but if you add original content to them, this increases your chances to get your rankings back.
5 No Pages with 1-2 Paragraphs of Text Only
Since these pages are easier to create, many webmasters started populating their sites with such short pages in order to increase the number of pages of the site. Now the rules have changed and these pages with 1-2 paragraphs of text can damage your rankings. Add more text or remove the pages – these are the two options you have.
6 Panda Likes New Content
News and recent stuff have always been loved by search engines but with Panda this is even more important. This includes news but also recently updated pages. In fact, about 35% of searches will be affected because preference will be given to current pages. Well, this is hardly a reason to turn your site into a news machine but if you try to update your content as frequently as you can, this will help.
7 No Scraped Content
With Panda, scraped content is (almost) as bad as duplicate content. If you are using spun articles, this can seriously hurt you. While with article sites you have more freedom in rewording your content, with descriptions on shopping sites it is trickier because if you have to stay factual, there aren’t unlimited ways to reword a short 100-200 word description. Still, try to make your descriptions as original as possible.
8 Be Careful with Affiliate Links and Ads
Tons of outbound links is bad but tons of affiliate links on a page is even worse - too many of them on a page and you will be Pandalized. This is why you need to cut the number of affiliate links on a page. For a better effect, you can also make them nofollow, if possible. The number of ads on a page also plays role with Panda and the rule is: the fewer, the better. Keep only the highest profitable ads (i.e. the ones that are really making you moneyand let the rest go.
9 Minimize Duplicate Template Content
Duplicate content applies not only to posts but to everything on a page. If you are using the same template for all your pages, chances are you have lots of duplicate template content – i.e. the same blocks of text (and links) you reuse on each page. Inspect these blocks that repeat on every page and keep only the most important ones.
10 Too Many Outbound Links with Keywords
Too many outbound links are bad but when they are with keywords as anchor text, this is even worse. The assumption is that these links are the result of a link exchange – i.e. they aren’t natural. This can be a huge problem if you accept guest posts because authors typically include keywords in their links and their byline. Try to keep the anchor text of your outbound links diverse and limit keyword stuffed anchors as much as you can.
11 Poor Internal Linking Structure
Humans and bots like a clean navigation structure. Now with Panda this gains even more weight. Therefore, check your internal links and streamline your navigation – this will help for sure.
The Panda update caused quite a lot of stir. For the sites that were hit the changes were everything but welcome but since there is so much search spam, it was bound to happen. If you don’t want to be on the receiving end, clean your site and make it Panda-compliant. This is the only way (back) to top search results.

How to Analyze Your SEO Competitors
Have you ever had the feeling that no matter what you do, you are not successful with search engines? While it is quite possible that you are doing things wrong, one other possible reason for your poor SEO performance is that your competition is really tough. If you are in a very competitive niche, then your competition can be really smashing and you just can’t afford not to keep an eye on them.
Well, even if your niche isn’t that competitive, you will only win if you know how to monitor your competitors’ success and failure. Here are some steps you can do to analyze your SEO competition.
1 Find Who Your SEO Competitors Are
You can’t analyze your competitors, if you don’t know who they are. In some cases identifying your competitors is very easy – for instance, if you have an offline business and you know your competitors there, just check their sites and you are done.
However, in other cases, identifying your competition isn’t that easy. Your competitors could be sites in your niche, sites that rank well for your major keywords, or direct competitors for your long tail keywords, etc. The list of your competitors might be a pretty long one and obviously you can’t monitor all of them. Perform a search with Google about your target keywords and make a list of the sites/companies that pop high in the search results. You can consider these to be your main competitors.
2 Visit Your Competitors’ Sites and Analyze Them
After you have a list of your competitors – or at least the major ones – the next step is to visit their sites and analyze them. You should be watching if their sites are designed professionally, if they have much content, what the quality of their content is, whether they use static or dynamic URLs, etc. This basic site inspection can give you a lot of information about how professional your competition’s Web presence is, hence how likely or unlikely it is search engines to love them.
3 Analyze The Keywords Your Competitors Use
Keywords have always been the most important factor for SEO success. This is why you can expect that if your competitors are using keywords properly, their site will rank well in search engines. You might have some difficulty identifying the keywords your competition uses because what you think to be top keywords for your niche, might not be on their list at all. If you don’t know which keywords they use, try checking if they use your keywords – this is more than nothing.
Alternatively, you can use the Website Keyword Suggestion tool to check which keywords are supposed to do well for their site. While doing the check, you might find many useful keywords you have skipped and start optimizing your site for them.
You should also check the keyword density of your competitors’ keywords. The Keyword Desnity Cloud tool will help you get an idea. Also, don’t forget to check the location of the keywords – i.e. are there keywords in the headings, metatags, image tags, the URLs, etc.
4 Check the Competition’s Backlinks
Backlinks are the other backbone of good SEO rankings. This is why you need to thoroughly examine the backlinks of the competition. Look for their number and origin, anchor text, etc. and you will get a clue how your competition is doing on this front. Very often you might get some backlink ideas for you – i.e. if you see that your competitors have backlinks from popular sites you didn’t know about, contact the webmaster of the popular site to see if you can get backlinks from them, too. The tools you can use are free and some of the best are: Backlink Anchor Text Analysis and Backlink Summary.
5 Check Other SEO Factors
Keywords and backlinks are important but they aren’t everything. In order to get a thorough idea of how your competition is ranking, you need also to check your competitors’ Page Ranks in Google and how they perform in Yahoo and Bing. You should also look at the number of indexed pages the sites of your competitors have with search engines.
6 Evaluate Your Competition’s Presence on Social Media
Social media tend to drive lots of traffic to a site. This is why you can’t skip a check how your competitors are doing on social media. Unfortunately, this check is harder to perform. Social bookmarking sites are one of the types of social media and you can start your research from them. Have a look at some of the major social bookmarking sites to see if your competitors have posts there and how popular these posts are.
Twitter and Facebook are two other huge sources of traffic. You can browse to see if your major competitors have profiles at these sites but unless you make friends with them, you will never know what exactly they post. Still, if their profiles have publicly available sections, this gives an idea of what they do on Twitter and Facebook.
7 Analyze How Your Competitors Are Using PPC Ads
Many businesses have figured out that using PPC to drive quality traffic is cheaper and more efficient than optimizing to rank well in natural search results. Google Adwords is the preferred choice for PPC but there are also other networks many webmasters will use. One of the best tools, though it is limited to Google Adwords only, is the Analyze Competition tool by Google. It allows to compare how your PPC is doing in comparison to your competitors’ campaigns.
Monitoring your competition is a never ending task. All the activities listed in this article are quite time consuming but if you don’t want to be left clueless about the world around you, you do need to take the time and perform the analysis. Even if you see you can’t beat the competition, you will certainly learn from them and this will help you be more efficient in your own SEO efforts.

If you are frustrated with your Adsense revenue, or if your Adsense account has been banned, this isn’t the end of the world. Adsense might be the Mercedes of ad networks but from the thousands of ad networks out there there must be many other alternatives to monetize your site. Indeed, there are and in some cases they will work much better for you. Of course, the result depends on many factors, such as your niche, how much traffic you have and where it comes from, etc. but all equal any of these Adsense alternatives can bring you real money. Here are 10 Google Adsense alternatives to consider:
1 Media.netProbably of all the ad networks on the list, this is the least known but it is also the best. They offer very innovative solutions, such as content ads, search targeting, web bar, and mobile ads. Media.net is especially good for huge sites with lots of US, UK, and Canada traffic. One of the downsides of Media.net is that the payment is at $100 but for a huge site this should be pocket money.
2 ChitikaChitika doesn’t offer that many types of ads but its main advantage is that the ads it offers are very targeted. The CTR is great because the ads are displayed only when a user comes from a search engine. Its low $10 payout is also good because even if your site is small, or you use only one ad block, most likely you will be getting payments monthly instead of having to wait for them for months.
3 BidvertiserBidvertiser is another (mainly) PPC network, though they started offering a conversion bonus. Its payout is also at $10, which means for a small site it is also an option.
4 InfolinksInfolinks offers in-text advertising. In-text ads are very unobtrusive compared to the rest and they don’t eat space because they are displayed as popups when the user hovers over the hyperlink in the text they are anchored to. In-text ads from Infolinks work surprisingly well, though it varies depending on the niche. However, its payout of $50 isn’t very nice, if your site(s) are small because you might have to wait for months to reach it.
5 adBriteMany webmasters consider adBrite to be the best Google Adsense alternative but since my experience with them isn’t as good as my experience with Chitika or Infolinks, it comes as Number 5. adBrite is essentially an ad marketplace, where buyers and sellers can communicate to negotiate the price. This is what makes it different from the rest. However, you need to have a very popular site with a very lucrative demographics in order to make it there because the competition is really huge.
6 ClickbankIf you do not insist on using CPC ads as a Google Adsense alternative but are open to suggestions, then you should try affiliate sales (known also as CPA – Cost Per Action). Clickbank is the Mecca of CPA offers and it should be your first stop. Clickbank offers probably millions of products and choosing what to promote could be the hardest task. However, the rewards you get could be times what you are making with Adsense on a good day.
7 AmazonAmazon is another CPA ad network that works well for many publishers. It is especially good if you have a tech site because there are lots of cool gadgets there but since they have offers in almost any niche, it is also an option. Their ads are context sensitive and because of this are almost always relevant. However, their terms are very complicated and it will take you a lot of time to get familiar with what commissions you will be getting for your sales.
8 KonteraKontera is another in-text network you can consider an alternative to Google Adsense. It is comparable in performance with Infolinks but again, this varies a lot depending on the niche. However, if you are to choose between Kontera and Infolinks, I will definitely pick Infolinks.
9 eBayIf Clickbank, Amazon, and a few other of the top CPA networks don’t work for you, you could give eBay a try. Again, your success (or the lack of it) with it varies depending on the niche but you can make some money with it. I wouldn’t put eBay ads as my primary source of income because this will waste space I can use for better ads. However, as a secondary or even tertiary advertiser, if you have some free space left, eBay could be given a try.
10 LinkShareYou might be surprised to find LinkShare – a relatively unknown company - on the list of Top Adsense alternatives but it is an alternative for real. It has a huge choice of offers and they pay at $1. Maybe it is even better than the rest on this list because if your site isn’t huge, you won’t have to wait for months (or even years) till you get the paycheck. Linkshare has offers in almost any niche and there you will find many of the best advertisers from all over the world.
I could add many more companies that are also worth trying. The good news is that there are many more Google AdSense alternatives and the fact that they didn’t make the Top 10 doesn’t mean they are worse. These 10 are my personal favorites and I can tell from experience that they do work. Well, the fact that they work for me doesn’t necessarily mean they will work for everybody else. In fact, under some circumstances the companies that didn’t make it to the list could be even better alternatives but you won’t know this unless you try them. The world doesn’t start or end with Google Adsense, though certainly it is one really good ad program.
